hi guys,

\/-------------------"been lookin on internet for a new motherboard"

for-AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3700+ SAN DIEGO SOCKET "939"

i have up to £100 to spend....

been lookin at asus range, any good? i have only used 2 kinds of motherboards pc-chips and tyan.

pc is not for gaming but for music and dvd burning (want fastest available even though i dont really need it to be)

my friend swears by MSI.

could you please give me some advice and some model numbers etc???

thanx for yer time

You already named the two brands I could recommend here. Asus and MSI are both the better quality with easier online support then other makes. The specifications offer more updated features and support for newer hardwares.

The two best brands of boards for AMD are Asus and DFI right now. Gigabyte are supposed to be really good too, but I have had a sour taste in my mouth for them for years now and I refuse to use them.

MSI sucks severely. Absolute junk. Those boards I truly hate. Very unreliable. PCChips are the bottom of the barrel. They work, well, for a long time, but they are no performance leader, that's for sure. Stick with the first two and you should be happy.

Ha Ha!! I use alot of Gigbytes now, had pretty good luck with them, DFI is a good board too, alittle over priced for what you get, Asus is up and down with me good board but to picky with ram!

crap and its true

i read articles about it. gigayte will have 51% of the shares while ASUS has 49%

thats ok with me as long as ASUS can still make their mobos without have to put a gigabyte brand on it

Try finding the support link for Gigabyte. Where the heck is it? Asus and MSI always seem to offer good support links as well as higher specifications on their boards. Gigabyte did offer a tail kicking micro atx board some time back. But they are still on the 3rd list here. DFI and Abit are some steps behind keeping up there.

DFI is still up there, but they haven't been putting out boards as good as their nForce 4 lanparty boards. Abit pretty much lost its enthusiast position once Oskar Wu left for DFI.

Here?

Gigabyte didn't buy ASUS from what I've read, they just started a new company together which will be making motherboards and video cards. But Gigabyte owns 51% of the company so they have more power.

That sounds far more reasonable then the other misinformation heard. Asus would be more likely to buy Gigabyte like HP bought out Compaq then the other way around. Someone around here doesn't like MSI  but their boards have worked out for many I talked to already. :D

Yeah, but your word isn't worth a hill of beans around here anymore after all your tall tales that were proven to be a lie, so I won't be placing too much stock in it.

I did sell MSI boards. Plenty of them. I was getting tons of DOA. It was a piss off to get the rig built, only to have to tear it all apart again because the board was dead. Microstar is junk.

It was probably the way you set them up that caused them to be doa! :P

Heh. I'm thinking something... In the last month that I've been here, 98% of his posts have been nonsense. Either nothing to do with the subject matter, unrelated, poor diagnosis or outright BS. The guy has 3800 posts. If there was any trend there, that is a hell of a lot of nonsense posts... Finally someone has the knowledge to stand up to him. It must get pretty frustrating. I know he frustrates me sometimes... So yeah, frustration response probably just about sums it up. lol :D

When going to look into a new 2007 build I went through various product detail pages as well as specifications along with other forums to get opinions. But even with the best name board you can see bad batches at times. One article that points that out can be seen at http://www.badcaps.com/

More than likely, if you're even reading this, you know what this site is about... Incase you don't, I'll enlighten you. This site was created to counter the bad capacitor problem that has been plaguing computer motherboards since about 1999 to the present day. It now being 2006, I am STILL seeing later model P4 and Athlon boards with this problem. The tale behind why the capacitor problem exists in the first place is because of a large-scale industrial espionage foul-up. Some component manufacturers decided to steal an electrolyte formula from another competitor. Little be known to them, the stolen formula was incomplete and flawed. They didn't discover this until it was too late and they had manufactured and distributed literally MILLIONS of these flawed capacitors. However, it's been going on way too long to blame on industrial espionage in my humble opinion, as this problem is still extremely common, and hasn't slowed down. Personally, I think it all boils down to shoddy components that are manufactured by shoddy component makers.
Over the years, there have been massive quantities of name-brand, high quality motherboards failing prematurely due to these faulty electrolytic capacitors used in their manufacturing process. This has doomed MANY popular and expensive brands of motherboards, including: Abit, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Supermicro, DFI, Dell, Hewlett Packard, IBM, and MANY more! The objective here isn't to smear the names of these manufacturers, as AT THE TIME they had no clue they were purchasing shoddy components until after the damage was already done... Sadly, some manufacturers continue to use these shoddy capacitors even after this issue became public. If your board has fallen victim to this dilemma, This site can aid in remedying it without completely scrapping and replacing your PC.
Most all the information about this problem is scattered in bloated forums, newsgroups, and unreliable (here today, gone tomorrow) websites. That in itself is enough to make you throw your board in the trash! I've gathered a lot of information, along with my own knowledge and experience, and created a central location to post it. Hopefully this will bring your search to an end!!
