Socket 939 versus AM2

Hi guys,

With Amd dropping their prices, its very attractive to upgrade to a new system. Im thinking about a x2 3800+Amd dual core chip and a 939 socket motherboard. The socket 939 motherboards are also very attractive in price. Is it worth the performance to just get a AM2 board? If so, what makes it worth it? My current system is a 2.53ghz pentium 4 northwood system.

I appreciate your help

Basically:

Athlon S939 CPU's use DDR memory.
Athlon AM2 CPU's use DDR2 memory. DDR2 memory runs faster than DDR, but has higher latencies.

That's the only difference.

Athlon AM2 Motherboards will be able to support the AM3 CPU that will, eventually, be released by AMD, and is expected to be their answer to Intel's Conroe/Core 2 Duo CPU that will be in stock soon.

So, I would say get an AM2 system, simply for the fact that they can take future CPU's.

Those that shout Conroe from the rooftops, remember, he's building an Athlon system because of the price drop. Also, Conroe is a NEW piece of hardware, so is bound to have a (few) bug(s) in the first (few) batch(es).

And Conroe CPU's will be hard to get for a good price during the first few weeks. AM2 is a bit of a disappointment if you look at reviews, in most of the reviews I've read AM2 systems have been slower than socket 939 systems.

The cheapest i've seen for a Core 2 Duo E6600 was $350 online, which is only about $35 more expensive then the MSRP. I'm not sure what Newegg will charge, but depending on your budget, you may be able to buy one right away or wait a few weeks for the price to come down.

The prices in http://www.directron.com/bx80557e6600.html shocks
Yesterday it cost 360$
I'm not thinking about the Conroe, the prices are too high for my budget. When do you think E6600 will cost ~340$ ?
To be honest, I don't think any time soon. I have a feeling that retailers are going to be sold out until September at least, and even then they will probably be fairly over priced.

Now im thinking about AMD Athlon X2 4800+ or 4600+ AM2
The prices of Conroe is realy too high.
