software installed by broadband technician

This may be a noob question, but what software is crucial to a cable modem to operate? I recently "upgraded" from DSL to cable and the "technician" installed a software suite from the company's account activation web site. This company also generously provided McAfee for free.

Any advice would be welcome!!

The software, usually freely available on CD, or available to download at the Internet Service Provider's support website, also sets up your network settings (TCP/IP and DNS and possible even provides an IP etc etc)

Also McAfee is likely the "trial" version ;)

If his cable subscriber is comcast, then its not the trial version.

To original Poster, if you have comcast the download was only needed for initial setup of your account.

You nailed it!! My system was getting very slow so I removed the Desktop doctor and Desktop software that the "tech" installed. I also removed the McAfee and reinstalled Avast 4 home. Speed on my 5 year old HP Pavilion is much faster.
