HI, Pals,

May I know if there is any software that can ERASE files COMPLETELY from PC, such that no other software can detect or retrieve the deleted files. Thanks.
:)

Hmm ...
I don't think that he means a whole hard drive eraser because formatting does that job 691175002, i think that he means a file shredder
You can find many on http://www.download.com and spybot search and destroy has one built in, there are many kinds, there are some that seperates it into parts and deletes each of them seperately or the ones that overwrite them several times and then deletes them, making them virtually impossible to recover
Try and see what you like and what you feel is a good program, test all of them out

I've heard that your hard drive retains an indeleble record of every single file you've ever had on your PC. The police, for example, are alleged to have the technical expertise to recover any single file that has been deleted.

Personally I use McAfee shredder but I'm not entirely sure if even this is 100% safe.

What I would like is a program that completely wipes all previously deleted files without harming any undeleted files.

I don't want to have to reformat my hard drive as I would lose loads of data and it would be a pig to reinstall.

I don't have anything to hide but it hasn't escaped my attention that society is moving into an Orwellian police state. In that kind of emerging surveillance culture, privacy is important.

I absolutely agree that privacy is important but if the computer did ever save a copy of ever single on of your files wouldn't all files that you have deleted be saved as a temporary file in the file format of .tmp?
If it did you can use a temporary file cleaner such as CCleaner which i presonally find it very effective at removing files that do nothing but clog up your computer
It also removes internet history and cookies which you may find very handy if your concerned about privacy

win xp...Just insert your xp installation disk and reboot your pc...it should automatically bring up a format partitions option...if not check your boot order in your bios and make sure it boots of the cd-rom drive first

What I want to know is can you totally erase all previously deleted files without erasing any files that are presently installed?

I don't want to have to reformat my HD. Too much hassle
