Hi: I'm planning to switch my O/S (Win7 home premium 64 bit) to a SSD real soon, doing it myself how do I do this??I know it a very basic question but not sure. Thanks
Back up everything important on your current install, so any pictures, videos, work files etc.
Assuming you are using the standard installation disc, put the SSD in your system as you would any hard drive. Put the disc in the DVD drive and boot up from it. Follow the on screen instructions which will take you through the installation. At the end you will have your nice shiny new Windows 7 system up and running.
Last thing to do is to go to Disk Defragmenter and disable the automatic defrag. All you have to do is untick the schedule box and it is done. SSD's do not get fragmented as a hard drive would and to try to defrag the drive will not affect performance but reduce the lifespan of the drive.
After that, you are done, treat it as a normal hard drive from here on out
What I do is I open up the run tool (Start button + 'R') and type 'msconfig'. Head to the tab called 'Services' and uncheck 'Disk Defragmenter'.
Then use Auslogic DiskDefrag or Piriform Defraggler for your hard drives, if you add some of those.
