Solid State SETI project

Hey all,
Firstly a little bit of back ground info. I work in IT, and have done for over ten years, but still everyone needs a bit of advice. The basics around this project is that I am a little obessed with the SETI project.

Ok I have been donated a Compaq Armada E500 laptop without a HDD by a friend, its a 600mhz CPU with 386mb ram, more than enough to run windows XP which it has done quite well in the past.

Now then, I want to build this laptop to be a slient as possible without causeing damage to the laptop.

I have ordered a Compact Flash IDE convertor to allow me to run a Compaq Flash card as a IDE drive.

Now what I want to do is run the Bionic software to run the SETI project, but i am a little unsure of what O/S to run it on. It will run on everything from windows 98 upwards and Linux.

I have never used Linux btw

Should I run this on Windows 98? and also I cant remember what the min specs are - would a 2gb compact flash be good enough for this project?

cheersb in advance

Well as I said I have never used Linux at all - Ever, I have managed to power on the laptop and the cpu is 800mhz with 386mb ram so I guess its good enough to run windows 98 or even XP but due to space requirements I guess windows xp is out.

I have ordered a 4gb compact flash card so I am guessing Windows 98se will work ok on this - its actually licensed for windows 98.

I am downloading Xubuntu now to see if I can work it out! but I am unsure if it will run seti software (bionic):

Operating system
Linux kernel 2.2.14 or higher
glibc 2.3.2 or higher
BOINC uses file locking. If you run BOINC in an NFS-mounted directory, make sure the NFS lock daemon is working.
For BOINC Manager:
XFree86-3.3.6 or higher
gtk+2.0 or higher
For application graphics:
Accelerated OpenGL support in your X server (version of OpenGL and graphics hardware required depends on the project).
Hardware
Pentium 500 MHz or greater
64 MB RAM
50 MB disk space

Will keep you posted on how things go
