In my past experience Avast is a bit of a system hog at times but, that may have changed. Have you looked at your motherboard temps with Core Temp or Everest? Maybe some components are overheating and freezing up.
I'd also recommend posting this in the Security section in a few days (allow time for mods/antivirus guys to respond). They will likely request a hijackthis logfile which, will tell us in more depth what is going on in the OS.
It is likely just an OS problem and not hardware.

Avast has changed it won't cause this.
