I'm looking to build a computer with $600 (that's with the OS, monitor I'll buy separate).

I'll be using it for:
Some gaming
Schoolwork
IMing
Internet

Advice?

its late so im going to go general and see if people elaborate. If not ill get you some clear specs in the morning.

CPU: something around 2.8 gHz
MOBO: prob gigabyte something ATX/micro
GPU: easily the 9600 GT for casual gaming. You wont need much more than that. Are you sure its just for casual gaming? and what kinds of games?
RAM: DDR2 dual channel 4gb <--cheap and effective for casuals
PSU: antec earthwatts 500W

yeah.... for casual you can pretty much go with anything.. but it depends on what kind of gaming you want? with 600 bucks you can get pretty serious.

oh and on the CPU: it all depends on what kind of gaming you want.. you could even go around 2.5 ghZ dual core CPU but yeah i need some specifics! any games for certain you want to play? anything you sure about?

^ that's going to be one nice build. if i was buying that the only thing i would change would be the graphics - a 4670 or a 4850.

These items would probably cost around $600

AMD Athlon II x2 245 $70
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P $80
2 x 2GB DDR3 1600/ 1333 RAM $80
ATI 4770/ 4850/ GTS 250 $110
Seagate 7200.12 320GB $50
DVD burner - $30
Gigabyte Luxo X140 case $30
BGF GS-550 $50
Window 7 premium 64bit OEM $110

Crosscheck with combo deal, you would save a few dollow on that.
