ok, basically i had this problem. i was working on an assignment for school, and then out of nowhere, my PC shutsdown, no warning nothing, just off. i freak out as it doesn't go back on again. i turned off the power at the back, on again, and then it worked, for about an hour and did the same thing. i turned off the power, then on again, finished the assignment quickly, and just as i was printing, shutsdown again, this was maybe 15 minutes. i turned it off and on once again, but this time, it was dead. i have a few led lights, so they turn on for maybe 1/4 of a second, and then go off. its like theres power going to it, it just wont boot up. the CPU fan barely spins, beofer its dead. i thought at first it was maybe the power supply, and so i bought a new one, replaced it, but yet it didn't work, so i returned it. tomorrow i will switch parts with my friends computer, because ours are similar, and i hope to get this problem sorted out. any ideas or help would be appreciated.

specs:

Intel pentium D 840 @ 3.2GHz
PCchips P21G v 3.1 mobo
1 gb (512 x 2) ram-DDR400
300gb HD
265mb ATI radeon grpahics card. (AGP)

thanks again.

note: computer is about 1.5 yrs old (self built)

Download CPU Temp and monitor your temps... because if they are peeking very high... then you have a problem.... if possible... post a screen shot of the CPU temp screen...

Erm well I think you're already planning on doing the best thing, which is just testing all of the parts with your friend- and yeh i reckon as well it sounds like its the motherboard thats playing up. Let us know how it goes ;]

pc chips motherboard are a cheap brand m8(sorry) but i reckon its either one of two problems
1 re-seat your ram and try again
2 its probable that your power supply to the cpu has overheated the board and caused a short on the motherboard, to check this m8 pull out the 4 pin rail supply from the psu to the cpu leave the 20/24 plug in and turn on, if the pc boots up with fans on and stays on then this is the problem and you need a new m/b

hold on, so the 20/24 pin connectors that come out of the PSU, just unplug the 4pin?, and it should boot up, and then ill know that theres a problem, correct?

just unplug the 4 pin supply to the cpu and leave the 20/24 plug in, and start the pc.
if pc boots up i.e. fans spin, hard drives spin, lights are on etc, then youll know that theres a short on the m/b concerning the psu to the cpu
(you wont get anything on your monitor because the cpu has no power)
also if it boots up with out the 4 pin supply turn it off and plug in the 4 pin plug again and if no fans spin etc then this is the most likly problem

ill go try it right now, but where exactly is the 4 pin?

It should be somewhere near the cpu and heatsink norm coloured with black and yellow cables be sure to squeeze the clip that retains it to the socket to pull it out

hold on never mind, i just did that, and without the 4 pin, it started up and evdrything, fans HD everything, then i turned it off, plugged in the 4 pin, and nothing, what does this mean?

ok, i did it, plugged it out, and it turned on, then i turned it off, plugged it in, and nothing, what does this mean

sounds like just as i said you have at sometime overheated the motherboard and this has caused a short on the m/b power supply to the cpu so the motherboard is now effectivly dead
time for a new mobo m8
others might suggest its the cpu but these are built to a high standard so i doubt if this is the problem

Most well known companies are ok and reliable i.e gigabyte, asus, ecs, dfi, etc, but if you want help with a new mobo just do a post on the forum on what your getting m8 and we will all help,
just one other thing
as your seeing your m8 swap over the ram just to be sure ok
good luck

great help guiys i just got the new motherboard, its an asrock, and cmptaible and all that, but it still doesn't work, could the precessor have failed?????????? i hope i still have warranty on it, i spent $200 on it, and i dont want to spend that much again. also it wasn't working, and i plugged out the 4 pin precessor power and it started up, but thats what happened on the old one too, so, any help? should i check if intel will give me warranty?

It really sounds that you're in panic... try to be a bit more descriptive with your posts. Double/triple-check all cables/connections and if nothing's happening... My guess would be that the PSU is done for, or at least I'd suspect it before the CPU. Have a spare one lying around? I'm no expert at this, so I can't say that it's the PSU for sure, but I'd suspect it.

So, can you tell us(=me, the dumb one) what exactly happens... in detail?

i switched the psu a long time ago, and it did nothing, what more could it be? also i've double chacked, and triple checked all connections. i dont know anymore.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:
