Some questions regarding noise from harddrive

Hi again! Not sure if anyone would remember who I am, but you guys were monumental in helping me put my computer together about a year ago today! This is (one) of the old threads (http://www.computerforum.com/190207-putting-components-together-6.html).

It's been running almost like a charm ever since. I did have a few questions, though I'm not sure how serious it is. For the past few months, I've noticed that my computer has been running a little bit louder. For the most part, it's just the fans; however, that made me get down and listen to what sounded like a minor clicking/whirring noise that sounds to be coming from my harddrive (I think). It's really low decibel, but enough that you can vaguely hear it while sitting at the computer. Is this something I should be worried about, or do something for? I can replace the harddrive if necessary, though I'm not sure it's a major problem. If there's any other information (type, age, etc) that I need to present, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Thanks, I ran it, and the noise seems diminished, but not altogether gone. There were no problems on the disk check. It doesn't sound like the "click of death", since it isn't very loud. I guess it's just something standard my computer is going to make, since I can't find anything wrong with it. Thanks for your help anyways!

Run this utility from samsung:

Also, looking at your pics, do you still have your PSU with the fan pointing up? That means its taking in all the hot air from the inside of your computer. I'd recommend flipping it, but it may be tough.

Thanks, I ran the utility under "Scan" and it said there were no errors. Do I need to run "Diagnostic" as well?

Yes, the fan is still pointing up. The way the case was designed, there wasn't any way I could put it face down and still connect the power cable to the wall. Outside of cutting a hole in the case, anyhow.

Yeah, might as well run the diagnostic to see if there's any problems.

Do you have a disaster backup plan in-case of hard drive failure ?

There are many noises from a Hardd rive the click of death is very noticeable if it was you would know the noise , the click is repetitive a rhythm if you like ,

Okay, I looked up what the actual "click of death" sounds like, and if it's similar to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwYSdD4fyRU&feature=related), that is NOT what it sounds like. It's much much lower, and sounds like the harddrive is just reading something (though more than it used to). I'm now wondering if I'm being paranoid. I'll run diagnostic this afternoon on that utility.

No, I don't have a backup plan, and I should. I'll look up how to back up my drive now.

One of my HDDs makes a CLICK sound here and there already for a year and still works perfectly.Still it CAN die at any time, but hopefuly that won't happen lol...

However since you cannot be sure wether your HDD is dying or not,the BEST thing you should do as soon as possible is to backup ALL your important data or even better clone the entire HDD to a new HDD so that later when that HDD dies (if it does die of course) that you don't have to reinstall anything...
