Some really stable distro

To which I replied from more experience than most; elementaryos is more work than he wants, it seems.

One can say the same for Slackware Vs. Salix -- I use the latter and either is more stable than Debian (which is slowly becoming too much like ubuntu for my taste any longer).

Listen to who you may, but don't complain about the consequences, OP.
 
Well...my plan was Ubuntu 10.04, but I cannot get the video drivers working to where I can set my resolution to 1080p. That's a deal breaker for me.

I don't see my driver issue going any better with Super OS, considering it's basically 10.04.

Elementary OS looks interesting. I like that it uses GNOME 2, but the information is a bit vague.

Pinguy, besides their redundant description, has also sparked my interest.

And Pane-free, I'm not really looking for a perfect install. I don't mind taking the time to manually set things up to get it running. It's just, if there is an issue, like no sound, I'd like to be able Google the OS + no sound, and find an actual solution, instead of piecing one together from 10 different sources.

Edit: Well forget Pinguy, I can't even get the liveCD to boot in a VM.

Have you thought about Linux Mint Debian edition? A little easier to set up then Debian but it is Debian with Linux Mint package manager and U/I but the core is Debian.
 
Okay -- I'm sorry if you took me incorrectly -- I did not mean to imply you were lazy. My comment on not condemning was not aimed at you so much as the one from Port Orchard.

There used to be a distro named element based on XBMC and Xubuntu that I used with success for video and audio (e.g. VLC) package handling. All the problems encountered and changes not agreed with have led me to Slackware-based distros like Salix. This, after taking a long road from ubuntu to Debian-based distros like antiX. But lately the Debian emphasis on only open source and its ties to ubuntu have come back to bite it in the butt, IMHO. So, Salix it is (or Puppy 5.2.8).

Suggest trying 13.37 and going to its forum -- but this is only a suggestion based on my personal experience (therefore, not objective - lol).

I'm sorry, but what exactly do you mean? Debian is considered on of the most stable distros. And like ubuntu? In what way? Other then the fact that ubuntu is derived from debian, i don't see the comparison.
 
I think debian has done a fine job at building a OS and since they are rolling release there extremely stable.
 
Linux and stable just does not go. I have seen some releases that are great and then I have seen some releases that go bad, it comes with the territory of using Linux because it is always in a constant development but debian is far more stable than say fedora which has been known to have some pretty bad releases.
 
Here's another opinion, bound to cause controversy.

BSD and Linux servers are the most stable on the worldwide web. Slackware,
being the oldest extant Linux distro, is also the most UNIX-like.
"Once you learn Slack you won't go back," the adage goes.
