when i built my computer back in December, it was running perfectly fine. when i booted up the computer it only took little to no time to load everything. but ever since i patched a file so i can change the appearance of my navigation bar and such and that file getting deleted by that Program. it's been slow when i start up the computer. i reinstalled that file by using an XP Pro disk to repair it. can anyone tell me why my computer is slow when i turn it on? thanks ;)

It could be that there are too many start up applications.
These unnecessary boot up programs can hog on RAM.
Please turn off such programs by going to Run and typing, "msconfig" (without the quotes).
Click on the tab, "Startup" and then locate and uncheck the programs which you have installed that get loaded into memory at boot time.
Examples : Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger are not required at boot time.
Therefore, they can be switched off.

Also, if you have Norton Antivirus, please uninstall it and change your antivirus to something else.

i just tried the "msconfig" thing and it didn't work. the boot up is still slow and i don't have norton but i have nod32

Hi :)

Alright, so you don't have Norton, so you don't have to worry about that.
I would like to know what other sort of antivirus/antispyware protection have you provided on your computer?

Also, have you tweaked any of the system files after repairing it?

Are you sure you typed it in right? That command works on Windows XP and Vista machines.

msconfig

Or you can download a third party application such as Tune-Up Utilities 2007/2008, or Startup Inspector.

oo it did work but doing what he said didn't work as in my computer didn't boot up any faster

Try uninstalling the service pack.

Whoa! Don't do that... why would you want to reinstall the service pack all over again?

Not necessary.

Anyways, @theasian100 :

Please download CCleaner and install it in your computer.
After the installation, please open it and click on "Run Cleaner".
Please reboot your computer and tell me if it makes a difference.

i tried running CCleaner and then restarted my computer but... no luck it still loads slowly as in it goes to the blue windows welcome screen stays for a second then shows my desktop picture and just hangs there for about 7 seconds *i'm guessing* then everything loads and i am able to use my computer

i had a similiar issue, it took like 14 seconds to get my comp booted up to run, now it takes 2-3 minutes. last time it happend i poppen in a repair disk and it was fine. i'm going to do that again.

Did you just plug and play the HDDs? As in take the HDD from one computer and put it in another one?
