Someone help me make a decision

Right, I need help. I don't know whether to update my 3 year old computer, or buy a completely new one. I don't want to build if I opt for the new one, just buy a decent powered machine and maybe stick a new graphics card in there if its needed.

OK, here's the deal. I have:
Fujitsu-Siemens 766MHz Processor
Intel Celeron Motherboard
nVidia MX200 Graphics Card
384Mb RAM
Windows ME
20Gb Hard drive

Are these sufficient details? If so someone tell me whether I should get a new machine completely or upgrade. If I can upgrade, then what do I do? Can I upgrade my processor at least? That's my main worry. If I can, whats the maximum I can have for my Intel Celeron Motherboard? Is there even a limit? I think I will be alright from there on (even if I am running ME) because I have decent amounts of RAM. I may have a pathetic hard drive but hey ho.

Someone give me some advice?

Cheers, Publius

what are you doing on your computer? depending on what you do it is worth or upgrade or just buy/build a new one.

Computer functions

Well at the moment I just use it for internet (512k Broadband) and old games. I WANT to play new games though! I'm annoyed cos my Dad has an uber-computer (Dell Dimension) and he can run anything on it. Grrr.

Well, I'm only concentrating on the processor at the moment. I'm not sure how much processors are really, could you give me a basic price guide, say if I wanted a sort of 2.2 - 2.4GHz processor?

£150 = $340CAD

Assuming you dont need different memory:
ASUS A7N8X-X ($70CAD)
AMD AthlonXP 2500 ($110CAD)
GeForceFX5700LE ($140CAD)

Assuming you do:
ASUS A7V8X-X ($60CAD)
Sempron 2400+ ($80CAD)
512MB PC3200 ($100CAD)
GeForceFX5500 ($100CAD)

I'd get rid of Windows ME. Windows ME is quite simply the most horrible thing to be called Windows Microsoft has ever produced. It is literally a waste of CD plastic. I would suggest upgrading your OS to at least 2000. You'd even be better off downgrading to Windows 98.

Cheeeeeeeeeeeers

I'm probably just so used to ME crashing and dying that I know no better! Yeah, ME sucks, but I can't be bothered to upgrade it right now. But thanks everyone for the help on the processor; can I just by any processor and drop it in there? or does it have to be Intel?

I never had a problem with WME

Lucky, I had nothing but problems! I kept upgrading to ME just to remember Y i downgradded again over and over and over just because I could not believe that it could suck that bad and that I could configure it to be more stable but I could not LOL.

Not only does it have to be an intel it has to be a certain type of intel -- a type you'll not easily find nowadays .... prolly not worth upgrading just the chip :)

Upgrading old systems can be a big hassle. Like Praetor said, finding a CPU that will fit your motherboard could be hard. You could, then, buy a new motherboard but you probably have SDRAM which is getting harder to find motherboards for. I would probably go with a fairly cheap motherboard (I have a SOYO Dragon 2 that I got free with mail in rebate that works fine), a Celeron D 2.4 GHz, and maybe 512 MB RAM. That should run you about 200USD. Then you could think about upgrading your hard drive and/or video card.
