someone stealing my internet

so today i was looking at my internet details and found out that there was an extra connection and it said it was with an ethernet cable so looked at my router and nothing was connected. i have a 2701HG-B Gateway and there are no settings that allow me to stop this connect. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how this person is getting access to my connection with an ethernet cable when there is no cable connected and yes i know its a wireless router too but they aren't using wireless.

thanks for your time in advance

and yes all i want to know is how and if there was a simple way of stopping it. Trying to do this mac address thing my friend is talking me through

If there's no cable in use that you can see, then the extra connection must logically be wireless.

MAC filtering should do the trick. You should also change your password and WPA2 key immediately on the router and on the PCs you have under your control.

Put a password on it. If you can not physically see a cable, it must be wireless. You should always have a password on your wireless.

Have you been switching devices around (ie hooked a laptop up via ethernet then disconnected or moved a console etc). Im not quite sure how this stuff works but I imagine that theres a possibility that something may have been temporarily connected or moved.

there is a password on the wireless i changed it twice.

trying to figure this mac filter thing out but cant find out where to set it up.

xbox is the only thing connected but there is another connection outside that some computer named NP- something something something.

I'm just going to have someone from support come over and handle this.

ORRRR if you want to get fancy, download Cain and able and steal something from him. ARP poison your own router and steal his unencrypted internet passwords. Nothing wrong with it if its your network eh? Maybe go as far as to post bulletins on his facebook or myspace saying " I steal peoples internets"

dont most routers have protection against arp poisoning now, least i couldnt see passwords on my router only websites

Give him the ol' Con ficker virus :D

But seriously, the best way to go, like previously stated, is to add a Mac Filter and change your security to WPA2.

My Linksys doesn't i guess. I would think a Linksys 4port G home router would have what ever standard protection home routers normally have these days.
I would assume bigger networks with more expensive gear may have some type of ARP poising protection. Its really just feeding the router incorrect information and making it send you packets that are supposed to go to the other pc first right? Its been awhile since iv taken the first CISCO class so im rusty.

OP Just mac filter or do what I said if you want to show him whos admin, lol.

Mac filtering...like an Admin
Banning Noobs...like an Admin
Running Drops!...Like an admin.

Is that from the like a boss song?

Also, your wireless broadcaster uses a special ethernet cable that will show up on any network center control panel thingy. It's not (necessarily) someone actually using it, it's just saying your wireless router is broadcasting.
