while sitting here i noticed an awful smell that i can only imagine would be the scent of burning sun tan lotion (if sun tan lotion is even flamable. boiling maybe...). anyway, i only catch a whif every 5-10mins. all my temps are fine, and i don't smell anything coming out of the exhaust, so should i safely assume the comp is fine?

oh, that happened to me and i thought it was computer, but it wasnt..it was this thing next to it that was giving off the smell. so check for other stuff around

Yes do consider checking for other stuff as fires are no fun for anyone. Check for things like outlets, powerbars etc. Also check other rooms as the odour might be stronger somewhere else indicating the problem being in another room.

Check your plug and surge protectors, I had that smell before and it turned out to me my surge protector was melting, due to a defective circuit. Check everything just to be safe

well, even with my face up to the socket and the power strip, i dont smell anything. i have no idea what else to think it is. nothing else is turned on upstairs.

I "blew" my sisters PSU and HD a few months ago, and there was a very distinct burning smell, I dont know how to decribe it, just an electrical fire if you've ever smelt one. I would just open up your case and smell inside...
