Something wrong with laptop hard drive or sata port

Hi, I have an Asus F3U which has stopped working suddenly; when I turn it on the lights and fan will come on but it will not post, the screen will remain blank and there is no activity on the hard drive activity light. I belive that there is a problem with the connection with the hard drive and the motherboard because I removed the hard drive and put it back in and it then worked for a few days until the same problem came back while I was using it, I re-seated the hard drive as before and the same thing happened again; it works for a while then brakes again.

This is a fairly new laptop (about 2 years old) and I cannot find any mention on the internet of this happening with any other laptop so I am a bit baffled really. Is it possible that the hard drive is faulty or the sata port needs re-soldering? Can someone give me some advice please?

Sorry for the slow reply. I don't know what model the HDD is; it's actually a customer's laptop and they have it at the moment, they haven't phoned me saying that it's stopped working again so hopefully the problem is gone. I'm pretty sure that it isn't bad ram because I tried turning it on with only 1 module and with other modules that are known to be working. I'm also pretty sure that the problem is with the hard drive and not the gpu or mobo (unless if the sata connector on the mobo is faulty) as the problem was resolved whenever I reseated the HDD. Also it would work sometimes when I knocked the laptop while looking inside which presumably made the hard drive work for a minute or so. Would bad sectors actually prevent the laptop from starting? When I did get it working windows started several times with no problems and the SMART stats were find across the board.

Questions:

You said you tested the hard drive by testing the ram in each slot. This does not test the ram running memtest86 would test the ram. I would suggest that.

You said you got it running for a bit I wouldn't think its the PSU on the laptop, but recommend running a test on it.

Pull the hard drive it will say the make and model you can then download the correct hard drive testing tool.

Lastly if everything checks out its probably your mobo, as it has been with many other laptops with these symptoms. You can do a search of the website to see other posts with these symptoms.

Good Luck !

What I ment was there were 2 ram modules; I tried each one in each slot then tested modules that are known to be working the same way so I'm sure that it isn't a ram problem.

I got it running "for a bit" while testing other components but it worked for a few days after re-seating the HDD. I did test the PSU with a multimeter and it was fine.

Testing the HDD with the propper tool will be my next step then, I'm 95% sure that it is something to do with the HDD or the SATA connection.

Thanks for the advice.
