Ok so I was told my CPU would bottle neck my gpu, currently I am running a stock e8500 and a 5870. So I went into my bios and figured I'd run a small overclock to lessen the bottleneck but while was in there I notice the clock multiplier was only at 7 and when I tried to adjust it and restart it would set itself back to 7 the the temp shot up to over 100c and my pc shut down. I have since only turned it on was to male sure all the default clock settings were running. So what is my problem here can anyone help?

Quick update. I started my computer into windows and using CPUZ I noticed that the multiplier was stuck at 6 and core clock at 2.00ghz.
 
Have you tried pulling the CMOS battery out of your motherboard and waiting about ten minutes before putting it back in to see if that would put your BIOS back to the default setting?
 
I reset the bios by removing the bettery for 10 minutes however the core multiplyer still will not alow me to set my cpu to stock speeds
 
The manufacturer setting for the base multiplier on the Core 2 Duo E8500 Processor is supposed to be 9.5. Try setting the multiplier at 9.5 and see if that fixes your problem.
 
What BIOS version do you have for your motherboard? One way you can find this out by selecting the "Run . . ." command.

In Windows 7 the Run command is under Start--> Programs--> Accessories--> Run . . .

Type "Msinfo32" in the Run . . . command.
