Sometimes posts n sometimes don't

Im trying to fix a computer for a friend. At first it would not post, but i removed the cpu, ram, gpu and tested it all in another mobo, no problems. I put it all back together in the original mobo, thinking the mobo was the problem and it started to work fine, posting each time i turned it on. Now 2 days later, its failing to post at times again, but when it does post the computer works fine, ive even run prime95 for hours, with no issues. Any ideas plz?

Were the standoff's installed between the case and motherboard? If not, its probably shorting out.

Multimeter says psu ok. I will remove mobo and c if its shorting, but its 2 years old, so i dont think that the problem. Is it possible that the bios chip its self has gone dodgy? i dont want to risk flashing it.

So it turns on but doesn't post? Most likely bad power connectors on the PSU. I have to replace my daughters PSU because I've diagnosed that there is something wrong with sata power plugs and a couple of the molex connectors. Her machine was doing the same thing, booting up sometimes and not others, causing errors on the hard drive.

no thats the thing, half the time it does post and half the time it dont. Ive had ATItool and prime on at the same time stressing everything for 4+ hours, with no issues. I checked the drives with seatools.

Well it is a cheap COLOURS psu, i dont trust them, they are those ones that come with cheap cases, but all the voltage are within tolerance levels, even when stressed.

There are probably some loose pins inside some of the power connectors or a dodgy rail inside the psu. if its cheap, replace it.

i thought by stressing the computer that it would just BSOD or restart, if there was a problem with the psu.

Not necessarily. Like I said you may just have a problem with the molex or sata power connectors. Since its a cheap unit thats the first thing that usually goes wrong with them is the power connectors going bad or pins getting loose inside them.

but, the connectors have not been touched since it was built, until now and this problem is the reason for me messing with it. Well i think we got it down to ethier the mobo or the psu, thats causing the problem. I will go for the easier and try a different psu first. Thank you for the help.
