I really need some advice, But I know about as much about computers as paris hilton, I have a myspace, I've installed and uninstalled games, I know a bit about task manager and thats it.

So let me tell you this story and maybe you can rescue from my misery.

Once upon a time my family bought an HP w/ pentium 4 processor, 512 mb DDR SDRAM, 250 gig 7200 RPM hard drive, ATI raedeon X3000 SE graphics card, and windows XP. I installed a game on it, star wars galexies. It worked fine, quick, and never overheated. Now it's like an old man in a marathon and I need some help fixing it. I cant run the game, and firefox+itunes alone makes the fan kick on.

1. When I start the computer up like 50ish (I counted) process's start up, none of them which I understand. I use task manager to shut some down but they keep coming right back! some, like 'winlogon.exe' wont let me shut them down. That doesent sound like a critical system process. With all this junk running I assume that contributes to the problem. It runs ipodservice.exe, and I DONT HAVE AN IPOD!!!!

2. When we bought the computer the idiot at best buy told my dad that he would need some kind of media program for dad to be able to burn cd's or something. My dad bought it, installed it, then realized the comp. already had like two of them. This new program might have botched some code around or something, my dad called tech support and fixed it a little.

3.lastly I did the analyze for the defrag and it reccomended one. It looks bad to me but what do I know. I'll defrag it once I get the 'go ahead' from daddi-o.

At one point I considered wiping the memory, but I don't really know enough about it to do it. Is it a good idea? How do I do it? most importantly can I save microsoft word, publisher, etc... along with some other files?

Our spyware stuff Is doing well, very few or no pop-ups, we have a firewall or two.

so any links to simpler sites would be sweet, basic instructions, recomendations, anything to help a kid out. Muchas gracias.

1. The ipodservice thing is Itunes. Go to run - type msconfig - then look over the startup programs and disable all that you don't need.

2. Just uninstall the burning software if you don't want it.

3. If you've never defragged, you definitely should.

4. Are you talking about saving the files or saving the actual applications?

Thanks, I'll do that, there are many like it, I suppose I can do the same for similar things? will shutting it down once shut it up forever?

we did but It seems like it changed some things in our comp.

3. If you've never defragged, you definitely should.
I agree :)

4. Are you talking about saving the files or saving the actual applications?
both problebly. Most importantly the apps. I suppose I can load files onto disks.

If you disable it, it won't run automatically at startup.

Uninstalling probably didn't change anything.

The apps you will have to reinstall after you format and install Windows again.

Goto>>Start>>Run>>Type "msconfig" and press OK. Now goto the startup tab. Now, if you recognize a program and don't want it to start up with windows, uncheck it. Don't just randomly uncheck stuff. But if you know what it is and don't want it to start up with windows, go ahead and uncheck it. Also, go into the services tab and check the box that says "Hide All Microsoft Services". You can also uncheck programs that you don't want running. Just make sure that you know what the program is and that you know you don't want it to be running.

O and you can stop the IpodService thing, that gets automaticaly installed with itunes.

And yes, go ahead and defrag. You should run it about once a month.

just make sure you know EXACTLY what you're messing with in msconfig, or you could really screw things up.

EDIT: ^beat me to it.

Those are the essential running apps. Stopping those processes could crash your computer, so it is best to leave them alone.

I've got the system config up now, but I've got a question. There are six sections; general; SYSTEM.INI; WIN.INI; BOOT.INI; services; startup.

Should I check and disable things in all these catagories?

Just services and startup. But be careful not to disable just anything.

Thanks, everybody, this is helping alot. I'll defrag tonight, dissable the unnesesaries.. any other recomendations?

you can also try processlibrary.com
type in a run process and it tell you info on it
things like dangerous or not and whether it's essentiel for system function

^thanks, I'll be using that.

One more thing, If I were to wipe the computer is there any kind of software, back-up-disc, etc.. that will save the microsoft word, publisher, etc.. apps?

I don't know of any but you could do a back-up using the windows backup utility.
expand on this por favor :)

one more thing, I'm checking the processes in msconfig and they don't have .exe
names and when I enter most of them into processlibrary.com they don't come up!
