having problems with Sony vaio laptop, approx 18 months old, basically dead as a dodo apart from the vaio logo appearing on the start up screen, someone suggested re installing the windows media centre disc, but the laptop came pre loaded and i did not actually get any discs with it, i should point out that i bought it from a sony centre and at the time assumed this was the norm, does anyone know if there is some sort of recovery gizmo installed that would allow me to reset the whole thing. any help is appreciated

hi charliebrown.....

I too have a Sony Vaio (FZ21M)... Certain versions of VAIO's only come with Vista as the default OS.
When I got mine a year ago, there was an invisible partition of the hard drive that should have all the factory defaults. (Windows cant see it - but look at the size of your disc in disc manager then compare it to the actual size you know the disk should be??? (My invisible partition was just under 10GB.....)
I down-graded it to XP, and while I searched the internet for three weeks to find the driver/applications sets for XP I continued to use Vista, only once did I reset the laptop to factory defaults using this "hidden" partition. If I remember correctly, you access it via one of the F-keys, I cant remember what one though...sorry - try F8 perhaps?
If, like you mentioned, its bassically straight from a Sony Centre.... it should still have this "fail-safe" reset partition. Mine's no-longer got this as I removed it because of the change of OS - but yours shoud still have it.....lol....sorry for the long winded reply.....

good luck...:)

The user manual or the support site should have that information. What you are referring to there is the bios option to restore the system back to factory condition with a preassigned key or combination of keys you press right when first seeing the Sony logo screen before Windows starts loading.

Double clicking on the user guide icon seen on the desktop should show if that's correct for that model. Page #36 in the pdf form of the troubleshooting guide also provides instructions on how to create a set of recovery disks along the Windows Complete PC Backup feature seen in the guide for that model at ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/RecoTS/2007Q3_RT_EN.pdf

The option to copy+save both user and troubleshooting guides is seen at http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/manuals/manuals.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&c=0&s=-1&m=2803
