Does your current motherboard not have a PCI-Express 16x slot then?
Yes, my K8N Neo Platinum only has an 8x AGP slot-- no PCI-E. I would like to get an X850XT PCI-E; that is why i'm replacing my mobo as well.
So if i bought one of those mobos which i have linked on the first post, i would spend...
about a $60 mobo
+ $130 X850XT
= around $190
this way, i will keep my current CPU, RAM, and everything else.
However....
You need to move up to a new socketed cpu.

The above is a Biostar Tforce NF4 SLI motherboard. It is currently featured on Newegg with a combo buy of a 2.4Ghz 3800 Venice processor. Socket 939, so its newer, it has the pair of x16 slots, and all told is 200 dollars for both parts. Your ram still works fine on it, too!
Add in to that a X850 card which would run 100-125, and you're set to go! Of you could get an nVidia card for SLI later, but that'd be too easy.
You could basically completley renovate your computer for a touch of 300 dollars shipped.
Or here is a 2Ghz Venice in combination with a Gigabyte board that has acceptable reviews on Newegg for 120.

Again, another combo buy.
The s754 is dead/dying. s939 is cut off, and will be fading out but is still perfectly acceptable. At least with 939 you can keep your ram.
If i went with your first suggestion, being the BIOSTAR + Athlon 64 Venice 2.4 gHz combo, i would be be paying...
$200 mobo + CPU combo
+ $130 X850XT
= around $330
and as for your second suggestion, i don't think i'm willing to upgrade to a completely different socket mobo for a nearly identical CPU as my current one.
Thus, the question is... can the
first combination of only a new mobo + GPU @ $190 bridge me over long enough until i go multi-core and DirectX 10, or would the
second combination of mobo +
new 939 CPU + GPU @ $330 ($140 more) be a more practical solution?
The second suggestion also raised the question of whether the SATA 3Gb/s interface on the BIOSTAR mobo is backwards compatible with my Serial ATA150 Barracuda. I also don't really have a need for SLI either, unless of course, two nvidia cards in SLI could be cheaper
AND outbench one X850XT.
plz remember all this is meant to bridge me over until i make the real dramatic upgrades in about 6 months.
That said, if you agree that those s754 mobos would be the best solution from my standpoint, plz indicate which one and why. And if you think that upgrading to that new s939 + CPU, would be better, plz indicate why you think upgrading to an Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 2.4GHz s939 would be better than sticking with my current one (being a s754 Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2 gHz) for the time being.
ahhh i hate decisions....
