I have a Compaq Presario Notebook 3000R series and have persistently had a problem with incredibly long (talking at least a couple minutes) startup and shutdown. I haven't ever really pursued it, but I am trying to get my system running as smooth as possible and as long as I am tending to everything else, I thought I would ask if anyone knows of any specific reasons for long startups and shutdowns. I have pared my system down to essentially the bare bones with few programs and none that hog space. I have cleaned up my system as much as a human can. I have taken all things possible out of the startup folder so they don't initiate on startup. Just curious what could be causing this and if I can do something about it. Thanks.

u running norton or mcafee? and are u using microsoft xp?
if u are, go to start...run.. type in msconfig and go under the services tab and disable from there all u can (use google to look up services u are unsure of)

I am running Win XP home and I did all that. I disabled everything that I was allowed to, using a list from the internet. I only left essential things running. It still is very slow, though. I didn't know if there were any other settings to help this or if this is just what i ma left with.

What are the specs on the laptop?

And most likely its bedcause you havent re-installed windows recently, when you keep installing/un-installing programs it creates keys in the registry and that can make it run very slow, doing a fresh re-install of windows should clear it up, but if for some reason you dont have a copy of windows or dont want to do that, i would download a registry program like "Tune-Up Utilities" or "Registry Machanic", these will find obsolete registry entries and delete them, also make sure you use Disk Defragment in windows, this should also help you to speed up windows.

Here are the specs for my system:

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 series, HP Intel, Celeron CPU, 2.8GHz, 128 MB ram, Microsoft Windows XP Home version 2002 SP2. I Have no idea about the indexing as I don't know how to access that information. As far as reloading windows, I have a cd that came with the computer, but when I put it in, I was told it the cd contains a version that is older and it has SP1 on it, so I didn't load it. Is there some other way to get a current version of windows to load on the computer or do I have to pay Microsoft for a cd or something? I am learning as I go here. I backed up my system in the meantime for whatever eventualities come from futzing with my computer. Thanks for the help.

(P.S. would just reinstalling Internet Explorer help anything? Just wondering.)

Increase your RAM amount. You have RAM type 200-pin SODIMM DDR PC2700. At least 256MB should be installed. 512MB is the best value spot. Get 1GB if you can. (2x512)

To buy RAM:

Crucial.com http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=Presario+R3000+Series&tabid=AM

Newegg 256MB: $21.44 KingMax Brand

Newegg 512MB: $55.85 Kingston Brand

Newegg 512MB: $44.25 A-Data Brand

Whole list: Here you go.

ya, 128mb is extremely low, i think the required amount is 256, that is probably why its so slow.

Your cd is telling you that its an older version of windows because you have SP2 installed on your computer...back up everything and reload windows with sp1 and then just go to windows update and download sp2 it's free and you will have a fresh install, and also upgrade to at least 512mb of ram but I would start with a fresh windows install that will probably help alot! PS: I did not see you only had 128mb of ram...at least 256mb is recommended for xp to run right!

it wont let you install xp sp1 if you have sp2 on it, so you need to un-install service pack 2, then install your copy of xp, then download and install service pack 2 when you get it re-installed, but it will still be slow because of your ram. How much availably ram do you have now? ALT+CTRL+DEL and click performance, then Physical Memory, and tell us whats available.

Alternatively, you could just ask for Service Pack 2 on CD in your local tech store like Circuit City or Best Buy for free. That would cut download time and maximize your protection upon re-installing your Internet connection to get more Windows updates as well as your anti-virus/anti-spyware program updates. No need to hassle between SP1 and SP2.

Thanks to everyone who gave their proverbial 2 cents. I got more ram and it is flying now. Near as I can tell, I should have had 256 to start with in this computer, but it only came with 128. Go figure. I put another 256 in and it zips. Thanks.
