Sorting out a laptop, advice...

OK, my girlfriends Dad has a fairly old laptop running Vista, and he wants it wiped and upgraded to 7... I have & Ultimate discs, but what I want to know is.....

Is it worth just deleting everything file wise and then upgrading, or should I format the hard drive and then clean install windows 7??

If the second, how would I go about formatting the hard drive?

i would recommend a clean install as long as there is no important data on the hard drive, this will wipe clean everything intstead of upgrading, which seems to run slightly slower than a clean install on an older laptop where vista has been running for a while.
to do a clean install insert the disc and restart the computer and it should boot form cd then follow the on screen instructions which are pretty simple
if upon your first attempt it does not boot from the cd check the bios settings (usually done by pressing del or something like that on startup) and choose the cd drive to be the first boot option
