Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with Windows XP.

For some odd reason, my sound and audio on my computer is no longer working. I went into the
control panel>system>hardware>device manager and the there was an audio hardware listed, but there was a yellow question mark next to it. In the properties it said it could not be found. I right clicked and clicked uninstall, thinking I was going to reinstall it, but now it is no longer listed.

Is the sound card totally shot or what exactly happened? It was working fine before this. Is there anything that can be done bring back the sound and audio?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Now that you have uninstalled the device, just reboot the system and windows should reinstall the driver software. If however, you still don't have sound, most likely you have a bad sound card. Getting a pci sound card would work in that case.

Reboot, see if it works. If not, run system restore to a day when you know the sound worked, and restart. Still doesn't work, try automatic driver update. If you find a new driver and it still doesn't work buy a cheap pci sound card like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829180005 (I do not specifically endorse this card, just a cheap option of newegg)

Install the software that comes with it and you should be golden.

As above, reboot and it should find it again. Try the dell web site for the latest driver too. If not you can pick up an all in one small USB dongle sound card now a days and stick that in. Self installs and is done in 10 seconds. Provides mic and headphones and is skype compatiable too.
