i recently just bought a computer im planning to upgrade and poss sell, but the guy i got it off had it formated so i dont have the right drivers.
i booted with a xp cd i had but now my sound card doesnt work, does anyone know where i can find the model number of the sound card?
also would i still get the error that it doesnt work if i have no speakers plugged in? i tried a set of headphones but it still didnt work? (have no speakers atm)

Is the soundcard integrated to the MB? Or is it a separate card installed?

Either way having the MB and or sound card model will help to determine this.

its intergrated into the motherboard, i just looked. i downloaded a program that apparently will tell me what the model is but for some reason now my mouse or keyboard wont work. (the keyboard was working for a bit but not anymore....)
EDIT: what a fool i have been, i rememberd puting the RAM back in another slot after i looked at if for damage so i opened the case and put it back in the original slot. after closing the case i noticed that i had been pluging the mouse/keyboard in the wrong slots....
il see if that program works now

Okay, now you need to look on the sound card itself.

You'll need to find either:

Brand, Model and revision
Chipset
or FCC ID

These could either be imprinted on the card itself or on small labels.

In the case of the chipset it would be right on the chip itself.

i had a bit of luck, windows found a driver and installed it but i didnt realise till later.

i have a nother question tho, i just put in a new network card so i can connect to the internet (all the pc had was a phone one) but when i put it in the PCI slot their is a gap about 0.5 of a cm. does anyone know if it will still work or is it safe to have? (also it came with another MB but it still left a gap in that one also)

where is the gap? If it is on the tab that you screw onto the case to hold it in place then it is no big deal. I have a PCI card in my computer right now that I had to bend the tab straight up on it to put it in. And it hasn't fallen out yet.

no thr gap is on the PCI slot that you insert the card into.
i put the card in last night but didnt have time to test til today, its working great.
