Sound chip in video card

When I got my new monitor I used the DVI cable and got sound from my Audigy card (as usual). I found my HDMI cable (that I misplaced) yesterday and I thought let's see how it works. I switched the cables and plugged in my speaker to the back of the monitor. At first I heard nothing so I checked the speaker icon to see that it's at 100% and I had to crank my speaker volume almost 3/4 of the way before I got some volume. That's a 10 watt 2:1 system so is the sound chip that weak?

Or did I the set up wrong?

Also the screen is smaller than the monitor and the resolution looks the same but I didn't check. I just find it weird.

Its simply pass through from the motherboard. Disable the sound card and ensure you have the latest drivers for the onboard sound.

You mean it uses the sound chip on the motherboard? That was disabled so I can use my SB Audigy PCI card.

If you are using the hdmi connection from the video card, then you must change the sound output to the amd high definition sound that is on the video card. Check the sound output to make sure you have the right connection set.

Both sound chips showed in the device manager so they are enabled but not the Realtek onboard sound chip. Also the Windows Volume Option showed all devices currently playing sound.

I was just trying out the HDMI to see how it works. I'm doing good with the DVI and my Audigy card.
