Sound doesnt work

Just today I turned on my computer and my sound doesnt work.

I'm running Windows XP, eMachines model T5212, and I have a Realtek sound driver. I unplugged all the speaker cables, plugged them back in, I tried reinstalling the driver, that didn't work, I tried troubleshooting, which didn't help out, and in the tray in the bottom right corner of the screen, there isn't a sound icon there. When I try to go to Control Panel and adjust the volume there, a pop-up says that "There are no mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add hardware. This program will now close."

Help is appreciated.

I would go to device manager and look around to see if thier are any conflicts there. Open up your sound devices (or something like that, i can't remeber what it's called) and completely remove it from your system. Then I'd download a new driver for it, dont use the disk that came with it. Is your realtek an onboard sound card? meaning, is it part of the motherboard or is it an actual card that plugs into the motherboard?
