sound droppin out

Whenever I play battlefield, or cs:s, something in that realm my sound completely cuts out on me from time to time. In cs:s i can change the speaker settings back and forth from 2 speakers to headphones, and the sound will come back in for about a minute, then drop back out. Ive re-installed my drivers, and that did not work. Also If my sound is dead in a game, i can exit it, and then go to my windows media player, and play a song and the sound is back on. Does anyone have any idea whats goin on?

x800xt
1gig
500 watt psu
3.4 p4
no sound card, sound built into the motherboard.

sounds really odd, my surround sound system i have for my xbox does something similar it cuts out and comes back once in a while, i'd try using different speakers. If that doesn't work try a different sound card.
