Sound problems with my new Comp. (help please)

I just got a new computer and I can’t get the sound to work on it. I was wondering if anyone could help. First, let me give some info on what I think the problem isn’t.

My speakers and subwoofer all have power and are working fine. I just transferred them from the old computer. Also they are set up correctly, the subwoofer connects via the green audio out connection on the computer and the and the speakers connect to it.

The volume on the computer is turned up and the little sound bar confirms that sound is playing. You know that little bar that goes up in down as sound plays.

The computer says that the “Digital output device (SPDIF)” is properly working

This was also a floor model in the compUSA I purchased it from. It was hooked up and sound was playing there. Of course it was hooked up to a big TV, could the sound have been coming from that?

Final bit of info, my motherboard is a nForce 680i SLI. I believe the sound the computer is using is just the on board sound.

Oh and I am running windows Vista.

The only thing I can think of is that I need new speakers that are compatible. But also, my headphones don’t work on it either.

Most likely it isnt the speakers since your headphones dont work either, but if u have a another computer(laptop) laying around, go ahead and and make sure that it plays on there.

Are you trying to use 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 channels? or just simply 2.1?

Edit: I think your board supports everything.

I assume you are using the on board sound. Well, I just have a similar problem today but I have a sound card instead. I am not sure if this will work for you but I guess you can give it a shot. My speakers do not play because I had my headset plugged in (my sound card lets me play my speaker / headset at the same time. It's an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum so yeah..). Anyways, I fixed it by un-checking "Mute speakers when Headset is plugged in" option and now my speakers work fine. You might have the same problem. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot. =]

Dont worry guys, problem solved.

Turns out they had all the sound options exept for digital, which they were using, disabled. The problem was that with the current windows settings, disabled devices were hidden (not just grayed out) so I couldent see that those options were there.
