greetings all,
if a person has win xp pro can that person obtain and/or download "whatever it is" to upgrade it so that it has or is "sp1 and sp2"?....if this is an inappropriate question, it is not meant to be so, if someone tells me that it is, i will come back and edit it out!....thanks again!:)

not innapropriate at all, it can be downloaded at the microsoft website for free

......if i download it, can the "upgrade" simply be stored on the computer until such a time that i could install it?...do i have to be on the net to install it at the time?..thanks again for the response.......i will attempt to see where this download is.....

Service packs are cumulative. This means that the problems that are fixed in a service pack are also fixed in later service packs. For example, Windows XP SP2 contains all the fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). You do not have to install an earlier service pack before you install Windows XP SP2.

Download and save this file. (I sure hope you have broadband... it's 266MB!) Ignore the "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER" crap. This download is what you're looking for.
The next time you reformat, install XP, then run the SP2 executable before you install anything else. When you're done, you'll have XP SP2. I did it for my SP1 install and everything worked just fine. :)

If you install SP2 theres no reason to install SP1 first or at all.

Note You may recall that Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released in September 2002. If you never installed SP1, don't worry. Every improvement contained in SP1 is also included in SP2.

You can slipstream SP2 to your XP cd then you dont have to install it separate

Thanks for that!

I downloaded XP SP2 (the service pack, not the OS) for my XP Pro machine from a third party site, since Microsuck claimed my key was not legit, but the tool needed to 'change my key due to a major hardware change' required SP2, but I couldn't get SP2 from Microsuck until I verified.. lol!

Anyways, thanks for that man :D

Right: the SP2 executable does include all the crap from SP1. I take it that you have the original version of XP? If so, install it as normal and then when that's done, run the SP2 executable file. Presto: instant XP SP2.
