i have Windows XP Home Edition installed.i have the free SP1 cd also with me.
earlier SP1 was installed but after a sys crash i didnt bother to install it again coz it slowed down my pc like hell.but considering the threats out there i have decided to install it.but with SP2 out should i download that or stuck with SP1.
P.S. I have a dial-up connection so that is also a factor to be taken into account.

i have 2.5Mbps Broadband and not a single service pack installed. PC running fine, never been attacked or targeted before in my life. This is on the rig in the sig.

All you need is the latest. But depending on your setup, it may require you to install SP1 first, reboot and then install SP2. These service packs should be looked at as requirement and not a "should it?" decision. Microsoft put those out for a reason. I'd say, let it download over night or ask a friend with high speed connection to download the whole SP2 for you. It is downloadable.

You can order a free SP2 CD from microsoft. I recommend installing it, i like it because IE now has a pop-up blocker and a built in firewall.

i hate sp2, my windows has it in it already, so i do run it, but i would stay with sp1, its better :D
How is it better?
It's like saying I rather have the old leaky roof than the new patched up one when it's raining outside.

2 things....

You can disable the security center and there is no new IE, its still version 6 in SP2. When SP3 comes out it will have IE version 7 in it.

I recommend going to SP2... there are plenty of hotfixes to apply after that is in place as well.

The worst thing about the upgrade is there are a few new security apps added that can be annoying if you don't want them, but it's easy to turn them off or disable them.

I frown upon telling others words to the effect of "I don't have the latest/greatest security fixes and I haven't had any problems." That is all well and fine, but saying that and not backing it up with the firewall/security solutions you do have in place is just telling the other person to walk into oncoming traffic.

There is also a newly announced flaw in Win that will be addressed shortly, so everyone might want to check Micrsoft for updates in the immediate future.

I agree, just because one made it out alive by chance, they shouldn't tell everyone else try it.

not the new ie but the new features in ie, such as the pop up blocker ext... (which sucks, it blocks all the pop ups)

turn it off. and run your own popup blocker like the google toolbar. i prefer not to have popups anyway. i might have to override my popup blocker once a month to view something.

it blocks all the pop ups
Whic is the idea of a pop up BLOCKER

The only beef ive got with SP2 is if my brother send me a remix via msn, or someone sends me something that is "potentially harmful" then i have to go into My Received Files ot open it, or Windows blocks and deletes the file. And i cant find an option to turn that off.

I'm still running SP2, as I also found some of the security updates annoying. I only use it on my laptop, as the wireless networking features are much improved. I'd just install SP1 and leave it at that. You need at least SP1 to download the newer updates from Windows Update.
