Lately I've had more and more spam. I use Gmail, and usually I never get any. Ive seen the especially nasty stuff too, no subject, attachments.

And no, I never even open the messages, certainly never the attachments. But what on earth creates so much spam? I never give my address out, i dont enter it for anything except what I have to (eg college stuff).

Unless some idiot at college is giving them out... I hate this place.

Or maybe there is a way to "auto-dial" email addresses (kinda like telemarketers), and thats what is happening, eh?

Contests
Friend joins a website to get a free something or other with referrals, refers you, they now have your email address aswell.

Ah-ha,

...that just might be it. I do have some 'less than smart" friends. Oh man if its them, I'm gonna let 'em have it. I never considered that avenue of trouble. I don't do the rest of that stuff you mentioned, unless I know that its totally legit and nothing will be shared (I have one newsletter).

I try to be as careful as possible online, leave it to the dofus's to keep messing things up. My mother-in-law is that type. She will open every letter she gets in email and run every attachment. Its why my father-in-law has to reformat his HDD and reinstall their OS every month. But try telling her how to be careful, and its in one ear and out the other.

I've told my woman to be careful about opening emails, even if they're from friends. Those friends may be too dumb to be careful about what they send, and (stupidly) send her a virus. But I have to give my woman credit; she's pretty good about being careful with where she goes online and what she opens in her email.

I get alot of spam emails every day. 90% of them are from Nigerian Spammers and the other 10% are from spammers who are registered and therefore have an unsubscribe link in the email. I don't know how to stop the Nigerian ones, but the other ones I am slowly unsubscribing from and therefore getting less and less every day.

Its weird for me to get spam though, gmail is great. I only recently started getting spam after 3 years on gmail.
 
Ususally with those "unsubscirbe" buttons, if you click the link then the spammers know your email account is active. they will send you more spam and probably sell your address to other spammers.

But I thought it was law that if you unsubscribe to an email that they have to remove you. But I suppose that's only if they are reputable.

I wish they would (could) prosecute harmful spammers. I can understand the people selling legit stuff. And I dont mind them as much, they're just trying to make some money. But the spammers with the intent to corrupt a computer(s)...they should be jailed.

I think we found out where the Spam emails have first originated from

When you send an email to someone and they place you in their address book
If there computer gets compromised (Virus/Malware attacks) Then sometimes the address book gets sent too.

I hate that with hotmail. I want to send someone a one-off message, not become addicted to checking my mail every 10 seconds and adding random people to my contact list.
