Speaker only work when game facing towards sound

It may sound weird but when I'm in a video game the sound only works when I'm facing towards the origin of sound. So if I was playing minecraft, and I played a cd in the game. Looking at it I can hear it fine, I turn my character away I hear vary faint or nothing. It does this with every game. It does this with both my speakers and headphones. I have a windows 8 PC. If anyone has any ideas it would be great help thanks!

Uh... Directional sound? When you have someone talking to you in your right ear and turn to your left, would you still hear the person in your right ear? No.

No i wouldn't hear them anymore. I changed my speakers from surround to stereo and now it works fine with my headphones, but with my speakers it dims quite a bit when i turn away from the object. Which is weird because i have surround sound speakers.
