Speakers and Sound cards (numbers?)

I have a 2.1 speaker set up (2 speakers and a sub) for a computer and I was wondering if I was to get a sound card if I would be able to get a 5.1 or 7.1 or something like that? Or if I would have to get one made specifically for 2 speakers and 1 sub.

The sound card's software will see a speaker setting there for 2 1/2, 4, 5.1, and 7.1 depending on model. Most newer cards are all 7.1 capable. You simply plug the 2 1/2 set's single plug into the front jack generall light green or light blue depending on brand.

I still have a set of 5.1 speakers being used on a new build here with a 7.1 model card. That sees the one extra output jack for the rear center there. But you simply refer to the pamlet that comes along with the card itself since some cards will see a line in jack as well as the mic in along with the others. The front would be the next to the top if not the next one down blue or green in color.
