Speed Boosts? Do they work?

I've read about applications that can boost your internet connection speed. I understand it can't make it faster (more bandwith) but it can set up your computer to make it somewhat faster etc. Are there any free programs that do a good job for a broadband dsl connection?> or is this whole idea a joke?

google has one that works ok, its free but then all of your web browsing is routed through googles servers so they may or may not log where you go.

I would agree that some connections can seem to increase when browsing the internet. The most prevalent speed increase would be that of a dial-up connection. Anything faster would not positively be affected by any "speed booster" program.
