Speed of program launch

Hi,

I am wondering about this thing related to power of processor. If I take for instance simple launch of Photoshop, why there is not really a difference between Pentium (1 core) and Core i7 (8 logical cores) in time which it takes to launch it.

The same applies to launch of the system. The difference between these two is like 5 seconds maybe. The time is not like 8x lower in case of Core i7 than case of Pentium.

Talking about Vista which has multi-core optimization of course so all cores are included in process.

So why is that?

would really have to see what hardware you have in both setups to determine what the problem is. If your opening photoshop on a pentium 1 just as fast as on a core i7 then a faster hard drive will most likely not make much of a difference. If you take two exactly equal systems and add a faster hard drive to the second one, the speed increase might be 25% at best.

Lets put it this way, the physical hard drive is not the first thing thats looked at when a computers speed is in question.

The quicker setup is made of:

Code:
Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz
3 Gb of RAM
Radeon HD 4870X2
HDD PATA (cache 2Mb)

The laptop setup is

Code:
Intel (single core) 1.7 Ghz
1 Gb of RAM
Integrated graphics card 8 Mb
HDD PATA (cache probably 512 kb or so)

To be accurate I am not telling that the first setup works slowly, just that launch of some programs works in the same speed as on the second setup. And I am just trying to understand why is that

Of course if I fire up game like Far Cry 2 the first setup has no problem the second one wont even start it

Oh its a 1 core not a pentium 1. Was kind of wondering how photoshop was working on a pentium 1 anyway :-)

Try opening a large program on both computers and tell us the difference in time it takes. When an average system takes about 30-60 seconds to boot up then taking 5-10 seconds off with a much nicer system seems pretty reasonable. It also depends the startup programs the nicer computer has to open, the operating system on both, or maybe even the hardware in the nicer system could be set to run at lower performance in the bios or somewhere in windows.

Photoshop opens in less than 5 seconds on the computer in my signature.

It took like 30-45 seconds on my old computer, which had a Socket 939 Athlon 64 4000+

That's not the point to have a i7. Let me give you an example. Picture that your multitasking, you are encoding a video and you want to open photoshop. Do that with a pentium 1 and a i7, there you will see the difference.
What to upgrade to speed up the launch of photoshop? Well... I think that's just waste of money. It really depends on which time you launch photoshop. If you launch photoshop while the pc has just booted, while every program is trying to run on tray and at that moment you want to launch photoshop, well I am afraid it will take a while. It doesn't matter if you have a i7 or a pentium 1. It will take a bit more time then normally. Of course with the i7 it will take less time then with the pentium 1.

I hope you get my point. Basically, to approve the launch time of photopshop is just waste of money.

Sure I get it absolutely...

Well initially I was not looking for solution how to start up Photoshop 3 or 5 seconds quicker, I can wait that little time.
My point was that even when using Core i7 the system (Windows) time to time gets lazy with launching programs and so on as if I had only single core.

Of course I get the multitasking about Core i7, I use it myself pretty often and enjoy it very much.

Did you do the test of measuring how fast each computer opens a large program? Try it about a minute or so after windows boots up so all the startup programs have a chance to open and the computer settles to an idle.

The slower machines is usually 3 - 6 seconds behind the quicker one. No big deal. I tried photoshop, several web browsers, Fast stone image viewer, Office, bsplayer and winamp...

I think something may be wrong with the Core i7 setup, if you're not
getting much of a performance gain over a Pentium single core.

I am getting a lot over single core when more power needed (burning, games, encoding, HD vids)... But when very little is needed (opening one program) the difference is negligible
