Speed up computer

Some times I install and uninstall programs with add/remove feature. Though I am doing this with add/remove feature, it is slowing up my computer. Is there any free software to clean up all these unwanted hidden files or unwanted registry files ? or Any other solution please.

I have Dell desktop, windows 2000.

Now that sounds like it's time for either RegClean provided by Microsoft, http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=pdp_prod or one called RegCleaner found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

Both of these freewares will easily run on 2000. RegCleaner will run on ANY version of Windows to date. It will be interesting to see if it runs on Vista too. Another item to note after any number of software installs or removals is remembering to defrag the hard drive too. When a large amount of data is copied and/or deleted from a drive other files do seem to start seeing fragmentation. Plus that is part of normal maintainence.
 
Besides a registry cleaner and defragmenting your drive(s) on a regular basis reducing unnecessary startups found in the startup group with the msconfig utility and disabling software not Windows services in the next to last services tab can often see things run smoother. CCleaner is one other freeware for cleaning garbage off of your drive. But just make sure it doesn't remove something you want to keep! http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
 
Either that, or back up all of your files and reinstall windows. It really is a good idea to reinstall Windows every once in a while, technically you should do it every year, because every time you use windows it gets a little slower. It will also get rid of any viruses that you may have on your computer.

Windows doesnt get slower everytime you use it dude...

Ya it does dude, no noticebly, but everytime you use anything it will slow down slighty. You have to remember its on a hard drive and its constantly getting read over and over again. It is a good thing to go off of a fresh install of windows periodically.

Maybe your computer is just defective.... Or you just don't defragment your hard drive.
 
After you install and then install again a number of programs an increase of startup items and a need for defragmenting the drive are the things that will cause a slow down on any OS. Windows of couse is the one with the msconfig utility included for manually disabling any unneeded startup items so that Windows will have more resources available. If your system get too poluted over a period of time where these steps fail to see performance improvements then you would "wipe" the drive clean and put on a happy face :) after a fresh copy of Windows is installed onto a new and clean partition.

Edzactly, windows doesnt slow down, you just add programs for it to run so your system slows down.

Windows is a program, and it will slow down. Like PC eye said, it gets installed on a new petition when you wipe your hard drive. Believe me it does help a little, it also gets rid of the viruses and all the other crap on your computer that you obtain throughout the use of the computer. Believe me it is a good thing to freshly install windows everyonce in a while. Even if it is just to clean out some of the junk you have.
 
The one thing that most fail ti realize is the amount of folders created that have just one file in them when you install "anything" especially when trying some freeware or shareware and then deciding to remove it. Loose values in the system registry remain often trying to load... ? something that is no longer there to begin with. Drive space is taken up with those no longer used items that buried the MyDocumentsand Settings directory with countless sub folders under each user name plus the other general folders seen there.

Another place to look for no longer used items in right in the Programs Files directory when a program is only partially removed leaving a folder behind. A good registry cleaner, drive cleaner as well like CCleaner, running the defrag utility that comes included with Windows, and reducing some unnecessary startup items help give Windows a boost on occasion. But nothing beats a fresh install on a totally clean partition for speeding things up.
