Speed up my computer.

So I've had this computer for about a year now, and I think it's being bogged down by some malicious programs or stuff. I haven't really cleaned it because I'm not sure what the best programs to remove the stuff are.

I know that Spybot is okay, Adaware is okay, and HiJack This is also good, but what else could I use to clean my system? Like defrag it or something?

Basically I'm looking for any and all suggestions as to how to speed my computer's performance up, as well as clean it.

Thanks.

Have a spare drive lying around somewhere? One tip for cleaning any drive fast is to simply delete the current primary partition and start off fresh again with a clean install of Windows. The spare drive would temporarily store any files you wanted in safe keeping until you are ready to copy them back to a now clean running main drive.

Tools for cleaning up junk on the drive and in the system registry are those like CCleaner for remving now useless temp folders while a free registry progrma like RegCleaner will offer an automatic registry cleanup option for locating and removing things left behind by software uninstallers and values for software and device drivers that have been updated or removed. A good run of the defragmentor in Windows after any lengthy period of time will help with the higher fragmentation level you may be seeing. The analyser will show the percentage before starting the defrag tool.

Try this. Go to start menu. Press run and write Prefetch. Then, delete all the files there. Write also cookies and delete the files.

A few tips on giving you an extra edge over simply deleting useless files and folders off of the main drive and cleaning up the registry besides deleting browsing history and other offline content would be:
1)reducing the number of items that auto load along with Windows with the msconfig utility,
2)disabling the creation of the paging file mainly for gaming there, and
3)unchecking the option to hide inactive icons in the system tray comes into that too.

For having gaming in mind the msconfig would be used for disabling the startup of antivirus programs and firewalls as well as other unnecessary items there. The 3rd item was simply seen in one article on boosting performance as far as unchecking the hide icons option and has never made any noticible difference here when either having all icons visible or completely hidden in the sys tray. That was a little obscure.

if your totally new to stuff dont touch msconfig use intelli hyperspeed. google it. Its a program that uses msconfig but walks you through it. Then your computer will be a lot faster. but do everything else that everyone said, delete old files, defrag, disk cleanup...but i honestly think after msconfig your pc will be as fast as you wanted.

The one thing about the startup group in the msconfig is that if you disable something you need or want autoloaded you can go right back in and re-enable it. For disabling items in the services section that''s where knowing which is MS essentials and services for antivirus programs and other is more important. Disabling MS background services is certainly not advised.

okay, let me try all those things. but what would be the best measures of getting rid of viruses and spyware and adware and stuff?

One main reason for system slowdowns over any lengthy period of time in general has nothing to do with any viruses, adwares, or spywares but leftovers in the system registry along with a long list of startup items depending on how many programs have been installed and removed since Windows was first installed. Besides using the msconfig for reducing unneeded startup items a good clean up of the registy seeing orphanned values leftover from uninstallers and other things lingering. Often the now useless entries are still trying to load drivers for programs non longer installed as well as when hardwares are updated.
