Speeding up a PC/ Keep it running like new

I'm looking for a compulation of the best practices to keep my computer running at its best. Also anything that will improve its performance such as tweeks to the OS and the use of programs such as Adaware/ Spybot/ CC Reg Cleaner.

I would like to keep away from stuff like over clocking the processor.

Thanks in advance

There's loads of other techniques, but the ones that come to mind at the moment are:

  • Defragmenting hard drives
  • Running Disk Cleanup
  • Unchecking surplus msconfig entries
  • Running antivirus software
  • Running registry cleaner

I did have a program called "Tune Up Utilities 2006" which was pretty good, Im sure I had it from download.com

Delete temp files from C:\temp.
C:\windows\temp and
C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp

I like CCleaner for getting rid of stray files and registry entries. Its free too.

Dont install software you dont need.

For all the speeding things and such, do a search and you will find several threads related to your issue. They will involve disk defragmenting, disk cleanup, pagefiles, registry cleaning, anti-tools, etc...

After that, if you want to tweak XP. go to:
www.tweakxp.com

I use it all the time, so most of them are legitimate.

Best thing you can do is run a spyware scan and see what comes up. I have webroot spysweeper and I can say that for $30 it's worth it's weight in gold. Whatever you do, DO NOT run adaware or spybot destroyer. These are actually rogue anti-spyware products that do more harm than good to your system. Again anything that cleans the registry and deletes temp files also does wonders.

If you want a boost in performance, a "cheap" way would be to add more ram. Speeds everything up in a snap.

I also use this program, it does a really good job of cleaning the registry, as well as defragging the registry. I have not once got an error because of a file that was deleted that shouldnt have.
