Speeding Up My Laptop

I have tried tinkering with the msconfig process getting rid of programs that don't need to be in use. I have done a disk cleanup and that doesn't seem to make a difference. When watching videos and listening to music files it jumps and skips and stops and generally runs slow. It takes a while for some programs to load and my laptops general performance is rubbish. Any tips?

First we need some background information.

What are you using for an operating system (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mac, Linux, etc.)?

What program are you using to play media files? Have you tried using other programs?

Go into task manager and then the performance tab (if you're using a compatible OS), and see what the CPU/RAM usage is when playing media.

And lastly, what are the specs of your laptop?

Yea we need more info to help, its like telling someone your car is broke and not telling them what kind of car it is. I would be glad to offer suggestions if I could. :-)

I use windows xp and windows media player latest edition. I have tried all different media players (Realplayer, VLC, WinAmp etc) all the same result. I have a 1.73GHz processor and 1gb RAM. A 120gb Hard drive with about 7/8 gb free space. I just did a little test and when playing a video my wmplayer.exe went up to 3-5%, taskmgr 1% and systemidleprocess hovered around 90-95%. Hope this helps a little
