I am interested in speeding up my system (in the sig) and I wondered if anyone knew of anything I could do to optimize the performance. I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on it. Thanks!

yeah even upgrading to 512Mb you will see quite a differance but i would get a 512mb stick to go alongside your 256 stick.

What processor does the Dell OptiPlex GX1 have?

lol i cant be bothred looking it up .

Install the XFCE desktop, it's lighter weight than Gnome.

Open Terminal and paste this in:

Code:
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop

1. Log out.
2. Under Session, select Xfce.
3. Log back in again.

Yeah, I agree with that the other guys are saying, try and get at least a 512MB stick of RAM.

You could download CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

Running that will clean your computer up and make it a bit faster, When I first ran it I removed 2GB of un-needed stuff

Also, just do the usual, Virus Scan and Defrag your HDD.

None of that is applicable to Linux! apart from the memory upgrade, but I gather they don't want to spend any money.

Have you tried asking on the Ubuntu forum? there may be some services you can turn off.
