SpeedStep?

Can anyone tell me what speedstep is? My computer has it enabled but I'm wondering if my lappy would be faster with it disabled. I have a vostro with a t7300 , 2gb ram....anyone? Just to know what it is would help!
 
That was helpful but didn't tell me if my computer would be faster if I had speedstep or not, also as a huge Metallica fanatic I love your avatar. (I have like 15-20 hours of official and unnoficial metallica footage including all of the commercially sold dvds :):)
 
Why is cpu-z telling me that my processors are running at 1200mhz when it is a 2.0 ghz core 2 duo? will shutting speedstep off stop this?
 
for a desktop i would leave it off. but laptop i would keep it on. saves battery. it will run at 2ghz when needed anyway.
 
It doesnt make your computer faster, it just downclocks and lowers the voltage of your processor when it's not needed to save power and reduce heat.
 
Ok well I tried turning it off and cpuz says they're clocking at 1100 mhz wtf man this is irritating. Also I only have 2 options in my bios, Enabled and Set processors to lowest setting and disable speedstep. Why do I have to set my processors to lowest setting to disable it, that's pretty dumb. Help anyone.
 
If SpeedStep is working properly and raising the clock speed back up when it needs it, then it shouldnt be a problem performance wise.

To check launch CPU-Z and a program such as SuperPi, and watch to see if it raised the multiplier back up to stock.
 
almost any cpu program should read your system as running 2 1.0 gig prossesors or somewhere around that it is a dual core witch means it has 2 cpus running at a combined speed of 2.0 like mine is a amd athlon 64 x2 running at 3.4 or 1.7 each hope this helps
 
wats the stepping b3? G0? i know G0 stepping lowers the clock when idle to save power and run cooler, its also better for overclocking, but if u disable it im sure the clock will be back to normal
 
You think each core is running at 2.0 ghz or it's 2.0ghz combined...it's a biiig difference lol, can someone please clear this up for me?
 
Well I hope so, because that's what I thought when I purchased it. I figured 2x2.0 would be more than enough for my uses, but 2x1.0 not so much lol...Well you can't get much better in a laptop anyways so I guess I'm not missing much.

They dont make 1Ghz Core 2 Duo's. It's 2x 2.0Ghz, they were just downclocked.
 
It doesnt much matter if it's enable or disabled. When you need more power, it gives you more power. When you dont need it, why would you waste battery or power for no reason? Disabling it will make your running speed constantly higher, but it wont increase the speed.
