SPOILER(S) MGS4:sooo...Raiden's a ninja why?

So i finished mgs4 earlier today and besides wanting to immediately start a new game (which i didn't because i needed sleep) there was one thing that was never explained: why did Raiden become a cybernetic ninja? Last time i saw him he was standing in a crowd of people in new york and now everything but his head, heart and spine are cybernetic prosthetics? WTF!? when did this happen and why? was he just bored with not being able to sword fight with his foot/teeth? was there a terrible accident where he sat in a hot tub full of acid? no one ever even asks: "So, what's with the crazy new transparent lower lip/oddly Gekko-like feet/white blood/ability to withstand swords through the abdomen? Something crazy happen?" You can't just leave that stuff out, man! And at the end he's had it all replaced with an organic looking body, only clearly attached in the exact same shaped patches as his previous ninja body! ...well...uhhhh...what?

Haven't played the game, but let Wikipedia provide an answer:

"According to lead character designer Yoji Shinkawa, Raiden is "falling apart" due to his belief that Rosemary had a miscarriage.[citation needed] His relationship with Rosemary ended sometime between the events of MGS2 and MGS4 without him knowing it was a ploy to protect herself and their child.[6] During this time, according to Rosemary, he became embittered and alcoholic, forcing the end of their relationship, although this may have been simply a cover story to explain their break-up to Snake when he inquired upon it.

Leaving the broken relationship, Raiden traveled the world, learning important combat and tracking skills he uses to help Snake during his final journey, and being outfitted with the cybernetic suit some time in between by a doctor known only as Dr. Madnar (a reference to Dr. Pettrovich Madnar from the first and second Metal Gears although it is never specified whether they are the same character. The name also may be referencing Dr. Madnar from the Snatcher game)."

yep, actually shortly after i posted this the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database was released as an add-on in the playstation store. Apparently between being tortured by the Patriots after rescuing Sunny, and multiple surgeries to rid his body of nanomachines...a cybernetic replacement was the only choice? i dunno, it only says he was tortured and underwent surgeries to rid his body of nanomachines, never actually states the exact reason, but i think it's safe to draw the conclusion. nice to have an answer but...couldn't we have gotten it IN the game? oh well, still the best game i've played since...probly ever actually. weird considering how much big pre-release hype usually ends up disappointing me
