The game starts off in the microbiological stage, and you advance sequentially through the different forms of evolution, creature, tribal, civilization, and space faring. I've heard the space phase referred to as a sandbox phase as it does not end, and allows you to play with the universe in many different ways. I dunno if you can freeplay and choose which stage to play.
The creature creation and interaction with other player entities is just the beginning. You can create objects and items, things like statues, buildings, vehicles, these can all be shared as well. You can alter planets with terra-forming tools. You can turn a lifeless rock into an inhabitable utopia by pulling ice meteors into orbit and crashing them into the planet, or introducing hydrogen into the atmosphere. So many things you can do.. mind boggling.
