"Spring cleaning" computer advice

Im a relatively novice computer user... and my computer is an absolute mess. I have heaps of unwanted files, programs and random stuff which means my computer takes ages to load. Is there any additional things beside defragging which i can do to clean it up a bit? Im thinking about just doing a system restore because im so annoyed with it, but i have way too many files and programs which i dont want to lose.
Also, every time i restart my computer my printer/scanner reloads itself? From about 98% onwards...
Clearly a very sick computer, can anyone help?

Do you have a CD or DVD burner? If so burn everything you want to keep then format and re-install. - Assuming you have Windows make sure you have a CD to reinstall from and a valid key for it.

Really that's the only guaranteed way to get rid of all the junk, it may take a while to back everything up but you should see a large difference with a fresh install.

Re your scanner, when I used to use XP my scanner would make noises each time I booted which in turn slowed everything down. I don't know if you can prevent that any other way than unplugging it and only plugging it in when needed. If anyone knows I'm sure they will say.

Thanks, but heres my main problem... i dont think i have a proper version of Windows. Being the naive person i am i got my computer upgraded last year by someone my mum knew, and recently i went to download an upgrade via the Windows website and it said that my version isnt valid, so i dont know what to do!

You can find out for sure if it's a legal version here. If it isn't, then you need to buy one before you can do anything. Look online for the biggest savings.

well that link said my Windows wasn't genuine... im going to call up the person who upgraded my computer and ask why he didnt do it properly i guess.
