Spyware problems

Hi,

I'm new.

Please could someone help? if not then what shall I do?

My bf and I share a laptop and last week it became infected with spyware. It downloaded itself without our permission and changed our homepage. No matter how many times we tried changing it back again, it still reverted to the spywares homepage as default. It also created many files and folders in our browser favourites. We deleted all of them but its left many annoying traces on the pc's Windows C drive.

We've been using firewalls and Norton anti-virus/spyware 2003, which has worked before but it's overlooked this particular spyware getting in. We made a few scans over the weekend and found some adware, that we then deleted. However there's still many invisible files that only appear if they're active, and they become active when they try to interfere with the homepage again.

These dodgy invisible files come in "dll" files and are called "Application Extensions". They also have no company name or details, just their own file names and dates of when they were modified, so they're blank. We managed to delete most of them but as these files are hidden we can't see how many there are left. Also wherever we go on the internet, these pop-up ads keep appearing that advertise certain produts and they all have the title "Only the Best". We know it comes from the spyware itself as these ads never appeared before. What can we do?

Thanks, I'll follow these instructions carefully.

I also lost heart in deleting these files this afternoon when I found out they reappear just after emptying the recycle bin. so they either make copies of themselves or are`programmed to restore instead of being removed. They're persistently trying to interfere with IE and these things are acting quite aggressive. Spyware that behaves like a virus.

If it is messing up with IE download firefox, a free alternative that generally isn;t affected by spyware, and further to the instructions from Lorand try running MS anti-spyware (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en( i have found this quite effective in removing spyware on all the computers i have used it on.
Yes, spyware and adware was a huge problem on my computer. Got rid of Internet Explorer and now use Firefox and I never have ANY problems anymore.

Thanks for the help. I will ditch IE as soon as I get this sorted.

I couldn't run "housecall trend" or "panda". Ad-aware doesn't seem to have any free downloads. I downloaded spybot's "search and destroy" but it couldn't find any virus threats at all. Would it identify & remove spyware? I've been running microsofts anti-virus, although it cleared most of the nasty spyware and succeeded in blocking it from interfering, but it hasn't got rid of all the spyware.

Hi,

I managed to locate a free updates Ad-aware download. It found 70 objects!! I removed them. Later I went online using IE (to get firefox) and did another ad-aware scan. It found another 2 objects, harmless but annoying. I'm using Firefox now :)

You had the "HomeSearchAssistent" infection! Although Ad-aware may help, I suspect there is still some cleaning up to do. Please post a Hijackthis log as Buzz requested, so we can be sure your clean! :)

Even though it deleted 70+ objects yesterday, it can't totally removed this nasty spyware object, which I found out last night.

Summary of this scan
Toal scanning time: 00.08.37
Objects scanned: 109339
Objects identified: 1
Objects ignored: 0
New critical objects: 1
Average TAC: 10,000
Negligable objects: 4
Negligable references: 4

Target Families Indicated on this System
1. MRU List (4 objects total) - (negligable objects)
These objets do not pose a threat

2. SearchClick (1 objects total) - (critical objects)
SearchClick has a TAC rating of 10

AdAware removes it each time but it keep returning later on. When I boot up the pc it's still there so I make several scans. Why does it reappear and how can I remove it completely?

I downloaded HyjackThis but I can't run it because the pc doesn't have Winzip. I went to a winzip site but found that it only allows a free evaluation period of 21 days before wanting a fee. Does that mean that after 21 days it expects you to pay or will it just expire?

Thanks. I've got it but I still can't run Hyjackthis. .. all what I wrote just now doesn't matter, as I was clicking on the zip file all the time! doh.

I'll get back to you soon when I've done it.

Does the Hijackthis icon look like a stick of dynamite? Go to c: program files\ hijackthis and look in the folder for the icon, and double-click it.

Edit : just saw you changed your post.

Yes, I found the Hijackthis exe file, it unzipped into the C drive and I was clicking on the zip. :o

Anyhow I did a scan and here are the results.

Download these programs.

CWShredder.
Aboutbuster.
Ewido.

Update Aboutbuster and Ewido, then boot into safemode.

Once in safemode, run CWShredder.

Then run Aboutbuster 2 times.

Then do a full scan with Ewido. When it first finds a problem, a window will pop up. Select "Remove" and "Perform action with all problems".

When Ewido finishes, Run Hijackthis and check these lines.
