SQL...anyone have experience with it?

I'm applying for an IT job and one of the questions asked on the application is how much knowledge I have in SQL. I don't think I've ever used SQL that I know of so can anyone tell me what SQL is used for, what applications use it, or something comparable to it so I can understand what they are asking for? Thanks!

SQL is a database program much like Microsoft Access but infinitely more expensive and much more programing is necessary. It is used to construct a database probably for a website or for a research project.
