SSD III issues?

So I'm looking into buying a 60gb sata 3 solid state drive.

I've heard that there are/were issues with the controller, which was basically bricking the drives. Is this still an issue?

There are a few drives on newegg.ca for around a hundred bucks that match what I'm looking for, is there anything in particular I need to look for in an SSD?

Brand? Other specs?

I also heard that you need to leave at least 64mb of unformatted space on the drive for it to use as cache when installing your OS, is this true?

SSD's aren't totally immune to issues, though generally you get a disk that works or a disk that doesn't. Intel drives have the 8MB bug (drive size shrinks to 8mb) which is correctable by a firmware update.

The chipset issue was that the SATA controller would degrade and not give full performance.

Yes. It's still an issue. The Sandforce controllers 2281, and I belive the 2100 as well, are causing random infrequent BSOD's for some users. It's the controller that a lot of makers are using to have that Sata III speed. That's probably why you can now find those sata III drives comparable in price to thier sata II brothers, altho they were more when they 1st came out. Intel 510 series w/ Marvel controller and Intel firmware may be one to look at performancewise atm. Or Crucial uses Marvel. The Sata II Sandforce 1200 and 1222 controlled drives are still solid performers and I've seen them in the 64GB range for 75-90$

And no, you don't have to have the whateversize partition on it. You don't even have to have the recovery partition on it. Not saying you should or shouldn't have the recovery on it, just saying you don't have to since there are other ways to recover. I will suggest not to have a partition for cashe tho.

so is it just the sandforce/intel controllers that have this issue? or are marvell controllers also experiencing similar problems?
