Are Sata III SSD backward compatible to Sata II motherboards.

Yes, but will only attain sata 2 speed.

Yes, they are backwards compatible. I am using my Samsung 830 in a SATA II laptop, and have used it on a SATA I laptop just fine. The only difference is the maximum speed you will achieve.
