Ssd

I've been contemplating getting an SSD for my desktop to use for my OS to make the boot faster. My main concern is that if there is a good priced SSD that will show a noticeable difference in boot speed over a regular HDD.

i bought a crucial ssd 64gig for £160ish and it was absolute crap!

stuttered its way through everything, it was like a hard drive with a stammer.....

stay clear of the low end crap, samsung do some well priced ssd,s that dont use the jmicron controllers (jmicron controlers are the cause of the stuttering)

im not sure if they have rectified the problem or jmicron is still garbage for ssd controllers

Well I was thinking that with Windows 7 I'd probably need just a 32GB or do you think I would have to shoot for a 64GB?

32GIG wouldnt last long, i had a 74gig raptor and filled it up with programs, games and windows updates!!

its amazing how quick they fill up!!

i heard raid0 on ssd's is pritty dam good, so if you wanted to try 1 32gig and find you like it you could buy another and raid0 them!

but if your like me and dont know jack about raid0 then just go for the 64gig range

I was planning on having just Windows and the updates on the SSD and everything else on my HDD.
you can go for a 32Gb SSD. It should suffice for the OS and only it.
Later, if you want install more applications and games on the SSD to benefit its speed you can buy an other one (32Gb) and set them in raid0. you would have awesome performs :)

The stutter is caused by the stupid cheap Jmicron controllers that low end SSD's use. If you have the money look into the Intel SSDs, they seem to fair a lot better than others.

yes intel ssd's are the cream of the crop but if you cant afford them look at the samsung or the gskill tittan

So what is the difference between single and multi cells?

Single cells are more expensive and are faster and only stores one bit of information on each cell (or something like that). Multi cells are cheaper but stores two bits of info on each cell.

a 2000 rpm hdd is better than a ssd

But at what price? SSD is better than 15k and lower RPM HDD's but are a hell of a lot more. I'm looking for a good balance of price and performance.

Does anyone think a 10k or 15k RPM drive be worth it to boot up an OS?

SLC>MLC, yes its worth it. You would prolly be better with a velociraptor or two in raid.
